Ensure your locks look their best with top tips from expert stylist Shelene Shaer from Tanaz Hair and Beauty in Johannesburg.
Tip 1
Go on holiday with your hair one shade darker than you normally wear it, especially if you are a brunette. Sun exposure can bleach the colour out and leave it looking brassy. Protect you expensive colour job with a hat and products containing a UV filter (such as Paul Mitchell Colour Protect, Redken Color Extend Sun, Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Color Save and Pureology Serious Colour Care Antifade Complex).
Tip 2
Always carry a spray bottle of mineral water with you. Saturate hair before taking a dip in the pool or sea, as wet hair doesn’t absorb as much chlorine or salt as dry hair.
Tip 3
Keep conditioner in your beach bag. Comb it through your hair every time you come out of the water to keep it tangle-free. Round up all those half empty conditioner bottles on your shelf and pour it all together in one spray bottle. Mix with water and use it as a leave-in conditioner. Great hair and a saving – bonus!
Tip 4
For evenings, pack lots of hair accessories like roses, clips, flowers and combs. Try not to blow-dry your hair while on holiday, rather wear your hair back in ponytails or plaits or style a wet look with gel, or use glitter spray to add glamour to your coif at night. Try a Zulu knot (coiled tight and turned around itself) during the day on the beach and uncoil in the evening for a lovely loose, wavy style.
Tip 5
Book haircuts for both before you go and immediately after your return from a trip to avoid any split ends. Keep split ends from travelling up the hair shaft with a product like L’Oreal Professional Absolut Repair Unifibrine Treatment Serum for Damaged Ends, which can be used to temporarily “glue” ragged ends together.
Tip 6
Invest in the correct styling and protection products when you wear your hair au naturelle: to prevent frizz, mix a product like Wella Glaze with silicone. The silicone keeps your hair soft, while the glaze or other texturisers lock in curls. We like silicone-rich urban:tribe Sliker (stet) Anti-frizz Gloss Fluid or ghd Rescue Drops Weekly Leave-in Treatment. If humidity is an everyday issue, wash and condition with frizz fighters like Kerastase Oleo-Relax Slim range for dry and very rebellious hair, which “slims” down the uncontrollable volume and frizziness, or the excellent John Frieda Anti-Frizz range from Clicks.
