There’s no magic bullet when it comes to weight loss, but naturally slim women, as well as those who have successfully lost weight and kept it off, automatically adopt behaviours that help them eat less. Here are three of our favourites:
Pull up a chair
If you stand up or walk around while you eat, you won’t be aware of what you’re putting in your mouth. A Canadian study found that people who were seated during a meal consumed up to 800 fewer kilojoules at their next meal than those who ate on their feet.
Keep goodies out of sight
Storing snacks in clear containers can drive up eating by 46 percent, according to a University of Illinois (US) study. Place cut veggies and fruit in transparent containers, and more tempting foods (leftover pasta, brownies etc) in opaque ones.
See the light
If you’ve ever inhaled a giant box of popcorn at a movie theatre, it won’t surprise you to know that people tend to eat more in cool, dark rooms. So turn up the dimmer switch while you’re dining and save the mood lighting for later.
