A new study suggests that processed food is linked to depression.

The study, conducted by researchers at University College London, revealed that people with a diet heavy in processed food had a 58 percent higher risk of depression.

“Foods, supplements and food choices and “balancing” are imperative to brain health and thus depression and our moods. What we choose to eat is the strongest drug that we ever have on a daily basis.” Says Gauteng based dietitian Sally Tarlton.

Sally also adds that processed foods often have trans-fatty acids, sugars and other chemicals, which increase our requirements of omega-3. Running low on omega-3 can be one of the factors which can depress our moods.

A diet high in fish, vegetables and fruit can assist with and prevent the onset of depression.

Eating lots of fish may protect against depression because it contains high levels of protein and omega-3, which stimulate brain activity. Deep water fish have more omega-3.

The high level of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables have a protective effect, as studies have shown higher antioxidant levels to be associated with a lower risk of depression. Sally adds that “while these extra anti-oxidants are great, we need quite a few and sometimes more specialized ones for the brain. Acetyl-l-carntine is a more powerful anti-oxidant for the brain and so is NAC.”

Want to stave off depression? Eat whole, natural foods and go for variety. Sally suggests that we eat a variety of different foods as there are over 100 nutrients that our bodies need on a daily basis and different foods have different concentrations and proportions of the different nutrients.
