I've had abnormal periods for as long as I can remember. At my first visit to a gynaecologist, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This means I don’t ovulate as I’m supposed to, and PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility. My periods were extremely painful with heavy bleeding, but the biggest problem was my mood swings. I’d fly into a rage at the slightest provocation, and this affected my relationships and outlook on life.
After years of monthly agony, I decided to see a gynaecologist. Although it turned out to be the best decision I’ve made, the consultation did confirm that I’d put on 18kg since I last weighed myself, and was classified as obese. I also learnt that while the causes of PCOS remain unknown, obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes are all linked to it. In short, my excess weight had exacerbated my health problems.
I was put on an insulin-monitoring pill and consulted a dietitian who prescribed a low-GI eating plan. I vowed to embrace a new, healthy lifestyle including lots of exercise, and nutritious, balanced meals.
Over the next few months, I started reaching my goals and it was an amazing feeling. After losing my first 15kg, I enlisted the help of a personal trainer and with his help, I pushed myself harder. Yes, some days were difficult and I often felt like giving up, but I realised that you have to give a little in order to receive.
I also gave up alcohol — no easy feat for a university student. People were always on my case about it, but I didn’t let their comments get to me because I was succeeding in changing my life — and my body — for the better. Of course there were days when I would crack and want a piece of cake, but every time I had a treat, I realised that it really wasn’t worth it.
It took me a long time to get my mind into my new lifestyle, but it definitely became easier over time. I’ve lost 32kg to date and am still going strong. It’s alleviated my battle with PCOS, and completely transformed my life. I’m a far happier, healthier person today and those fits of rage are a thing of the past. My friends and family love the new me
— and more importantly, so do I!
