Day 2 and 3
So off we go again on Wednesday evening, a rather gloomy-looking day at the foot of Table Mountain. This time we get to run through the mud and get splashed by die sprinklers – all the things you miss out on when training in a gym.
We walked for two minutes, jogged for two, and then finished off with strength training and stretching. Strength training includes exercises like lunges, squats and core work, that is, the dreaded PLANK. But I make it through.
Then it’s Thursday, the last training day of the week. We warm up, walk for two minutes and jog for three minutes x four reps. I feel fine even though we had another early morning call time of 6am in Woodstock for a cover shoot – I had to get up at 4am!
Then comes the WEEKEND… DUM DUM DUM… and I eat absolutely everything in sight! The week’s exercise made me so very hungry it’s unbelievable! So after devouring way too much, I make a note to watch what I eat more carefully so I can actually shed a few kilos while I’m busting my chops.
Week 2: (6-10 February)
I was dreading this week’s first get-together as Cape Town has been experiencing a crazy heat wave and I was NOT in the mood to run around a field; I’d much rather have gone for a swim at Long Beach.
To top it off, our friends from Spain are staying with us for the week and I really want to hang out with them and show them around. But I’ve committed to the SSI programme and I don’t want to miss a session, so I have to be creative with my time.
Thankfully my first session of the week turned out to be great. Despite the heat I felt strong and jogged comfortably around the field. We started off again with a warm-up and then did five laps of jogging for three minutes and walking for two minutes, ending off with strength training and stretching.
Everyone else in the class also seemed to feel much fitter and, I guess, more confident.
We were divided into two groups on Wednesday and even though I was late for my session due to a huge traffic jam on the M3, I made it into group 1. Maxi Cameron (also from SSI) and Maryse each takes a group according to the pace you like to run at. It seems that group 1 is the faster group, so I have my work cut out for me and I am very stiff as I am typing this, thanks to the lunges we did after our session.
My whole experience so far has been positive; the people in my group are interesting and very diverse, and each one has quite a unique reason for taking part, from back problems to one guy wanting to get in shape to impress a girl!
Oh, and if you know of anyone wanting to adopt a cute little puppy, Maxi has a rescued puppy looking for a home…
