Shape’s intern Jess is determined not to befriend the couch after boot camp.
This week the SSISA sent us bootcampers our weekly email. Instead of the usual motivational banter, this email read: Life after boot camp. It was reminding us that with two weeks to go, we must start thinking about what we are going to do AFTER boot camp. This had never dawned on me before. These past few weeks have been so busy with the same routine (wake up, rush to work, rush from work to boot camp, get home, eat, sleep and do it all over again) that I had simply forgotten that my fitness levels would soon be in my own hands.
Life a few weeks ago seems a blur. Before boot camp I spent an hour a day relaxing on the couch and watching TV before dinner. These moments of pure bliss have been missed and I could very easily go back to this life. I also used to tell myself that I was too exhausted to do exercise, and that there just wasn’t time for it. Yet I have realised those were excuses we all use because we are lazy and would much rather be lying on the couch with our feet up, than be out in the mud and rain doing push up’s(wouldn’t you?). Boot camp has shown me how much exercise and kilojoule burning you can pack into the short space of an hour. It really makes those excuses irrelevant.
But what happens when it ends? What is life after boot camp? How will I not lose the motivation to keep my fitness levels up? Will I just resort back to the couch? Honestly, I don’t know.
I do know that I have to be realistic. I won’t all of a sudden enjoy running, or willingly go for a hike on the weekends. I believe you have to find an eating and exercise plan you can live by. Not live by for the next 8 weeks, but actually live by every day. I feel I have gained great skills at boot camp that I could incorporate into my daily life.
So, instead of befriending the couch again I have decided to take action. I am investing in a set of dumb bells, which, along with my thera band and exercise mat, I plan to take with me on holiday. Now before you think I am mad, it won’t be that I will spend my entire holiday doing planks, push up’s and burpees (hell no!). But I will take 20 minutes every day to do a few exercises.
In these past six weeks, the weight hasn’t exactly fallen off, but I am finally noticing how much more toned my body is. No amount of mince pies, Christmas pudding and Mojito’s is going to take that away from me.
