Stuck in a life rut? Feeling down or just a little fearful and not sure how to get back up? Get inspired by these women who’ve won their confidence back.
I used to feel terribly intimidated by the sales assistants in posh boutiques so avoided ever going into them. Then a super-confident friend said: “remember always, they need you more than you need them” and now I’ll happily walk into those expensive stores with this mantra playing in my head - Gill Henry
The first time I had to give a lecture to a group of 200 businesswomen, I spent half an hour in the loo throwing up. Public speaking terrified me. But then I realized that if I was properly prepared and spoke, not from prepared notes and slides, but from the heart, and with passion, the fear just melted away. The bonus is that my presentations were so much better as a result - Sam Schneider
My best tip is to start a “Happy Box”. I covered a shoe-box in yellow paper and stuck pictures of sunflowers on it. Whenever something really nice happens to me, no matter how big or small, I write it down on a post-it note and put it in my box or store a memento. This could be anything from tickets to a funny movie, a receipt from a wonderful dinner with friends, a photo of a special day, or a flower from my boyfriend. If someone says something especially nice to me I try to remember it later so that I can write it down and put it in the box. When I have a down day I go through all these bits and pieces and they remind me that I have a good life and lots to be grateful for. This never fails to cheer me up and I think the reason it works so well is because everything in the box is truly about me, and my life – it’s not obscure advice from a book or from someone who doesn’t really understand me. - Keryn Legg
As a person living with bipolar, my sense of self-worth is often something in question. I have found that on those days where my confidence is at its lowest, a session at the gym not only leaves me feeling fitter and healthier, but brings an incurable smile to my face that acknowledges the power and strength I have within me. -Zubeida Shaik
My father told me that if you smile, the whole world smiles with you, and if you speak with confidence, people will look beyond your outer appearance and listen to what you’re saying. Even though my Dad died a long time ago, I still draw confidence from his words. Whenever I need a boost, I think of my father, take a few deep breaths, lift my chin up, and smile. - Sally Benson
I suggest that every time you pass a mirror, look into it and flash your biggest and best smile at yourself. It might seem odd at first, but eventually it will make you feel brilliant about yourself. Tell yourself “Looking fabulous!” or “Wow, look at me now!” or something similar often enough and you will soon start to believe it -Lauren de Beer
I have a Wonder Bra set that hugs me in all the right places and makes me feel like I’m on top of the world. I’m a big believer in dressing for success, and a well-cut suit worn with a waistcoat and crisp white shirt will never let you down. Invest in clothing that fits properly and flatters your figure, because knowing you look good is a guaranteed way to boost your self-confidence. - Katlego Tshehlo
Self-worth is your greatest asset in projecting confidence. If you love who you are, you’re able to go anywhere and do anything. Unfortunately, women are notoriously hard on themselves, hating their bodies, questioning their abilities, so they need to work on self-worth and it often only comes with age. But once you have it, you’ll be the most confident person in the room. -Shape editor, Toni Younghusband
