How to do a breast exam

Print page

Breast awareness means knowing what your breasts look and feel like normally, which is vital for picking up any abnormalities. If you find anything unusual, contact your GP.

1. Stand in front of a mirror and look carefully for any changes in your breasts.
2. Check your breasts by standing with one hand behind your head and using your fingertips to gently feel your breast in a circular motion. Begin at point A and in a circular motion, follow the arrows to point B and then back to point A, feeling for a lump or thickening (check your armpit too). Repeat with the other hand.
3. Lie down and put your right arm behind your head. With the left hand, check your right breast. Repeat on the opposite side.
