How to apply bronzer

Add definition and warmth to your face with subtle bronzer.

1. Use a special puff, kabuki or bronzer brush to ensure an even, sun-kissed colour. Always use light, circular motions with the brush, advises professional image and makeover consultant Tanya Suskind owner of the website www.thewholestory.co.za

2. Apply bronzer from the outer part of the face and move towards the centre. If you start at the cheek, you will deposit a splotch of colour on the front of your face and end up with a clown-like effect.

3. Bronzer should be on the “raised” parts of the face where the sun would normally hit: the cheekbones, crest of the nose, brow bones, temples, chin, jawline and neck.

4. Use bronzer to shape your face: Minimise a jaw that is too large or too square by applying bronzer along the jaw line and blending it under the jaw, fading to nothing at the sides of the face. To shorten a pointed chin, apply to chin only, blend underneath into the neck. Fade a double chin by applying to double chin only and blend to make it recede. To sculpt cheekbones, use a small brush and start at the top of the ear, sweeping gently under the cheekbones and blending in with feather-light strokes.

5. Always choose a bronzer with a matte texture and a deep brownish (not orange or muddy terracotta) undertone. A shimmery powder is going to appear obvious and unnatural on pale winter skin.

6. Finally, always have a light touch and blend, blend, blend.
