Make-up guru Bobbi Brown explains what beauty and balance mean to her.
My life philosophy
“Be who you are”. Being beautiful isn’t about being flawless. It’s about self-confidence and playing up your unique qualities. A big beauty mistake is when a woman tries to look like someone else. There’s something beautiful about a woman with lines on her face. I think we should use the phrase “living” instead of “ageing”. Lines are proof that we’ve lived life. We get them when we show emotion, when we laugh and when we express ourselves.
Eat for Good Health
I am not fanatical about food, but I feel better when I eat better. When I was in my early 20s, I tried every diet. I often felt tired, unmotivated and hungry. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20s that I realised a well-balanced diet of lean proteins, plenty of fruits, veg and wholegrains – along with regular exercise – was the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Balance is about finding something you’re comfortable with and that you can stick to. There’s no need to deny yourself occasional treats – mine are dark chocolate and red wine.
Take Charge of yourself
Instead of fighting the body you have, make the most of it. Focus on being healthy, strong and fit. Commit to making smart food choices and exercise regularly. Find a routine that keeps you interested. It should be a mix of cardio, flexibility and strength. Focus on how you feel and how your body works.
The secret of balancing work and home
Prioritise. If you know what’s most important, you’ll make the right choices. My family is the most important thing to me; I fit everything around them. It helps keep the rest of my life simple. I have bags labelled “work”, “home” and “gym” so I can run out the door without thinking about what to grab. I’ve marked the tags of my favourite jeans with a heart so I can always find them.
My five beauty regime non negotiables
Use a moisturiser with SPF 15 when you’re doing errands or going to work. If you’re outdoors for a long time, use a waterproof sunscreen of at least SPF 25.
Drink water: If you get tired of drinking water, switch to herbal tea.
Moisturise your face: Try a lightweight lotion for normal skin. Use a richer, hydrating cream when skin feels dry or sensitive. Even oily skin benefits from moisturiser – an oil-free formula that hydrates while it helps control overactive oil production.
Concealer first: It brightens your face. Use a creamy formula that’s yellow-based and one shade lighter than your skin tone.
Find a foundation in your skin tone’s correct shade.
