Here’s how to make 2012 the year dreams come true and goals are met
Before you rush off and set your New Year’s Resolutions, life coach Jacqui O’Bree lists the 5 common goal-setting mistakes you should avoid.
Mistake 1: Not taking responsibility for your results
One of the biggest reasons people do not achieve their goals is because they do not accept total responsibility for their results. Most people prefer to blame their upbringing, their genes, the economy, the weather and the postman.
To achieve your resolutions in 2012, accept complete responsibility for your results. There will be circumstances beyond your control, don’t be a victim of your circumstances. Decide to do whatever is necessary to achieve your goals. Focus on making the right choice in the moment and you will achieve your goals.
Mistake 2: Listening to everyone
When you set bold and inspiring goals not everyone will support you. Some people will tell you that ‘it’s impossible’. Don’t let other people’s beliefs about what is possible or not be a stumbling block. Acknowledge their advice but question their motives. Then make a decision based on your values and vision.
Mistake 3: Not listening to anyone
When you set goals, learn from those who have experience and knowledge. Research as much as possible and speak to people you admire and who inspires you – learn from their mistakes and their successes.
Mistake 4: Following someone else’s dream
As a life coach I have observed many people chasing goals that deep down has no meaning to them. Make sure your goal is has meaning to you. Your goal needs to be in line with your values and vision for your life. If it’s not, you will find it hard to achieve, you will lack motivation and if you achieve it, the success won’t be as sweet.
Mistake 5: Not taking action
Nothing happens until you do something. Having big, bold and significant dreams for your life is important. But if you just dream, nothing will happen. Do something daily that will bring you closer to achieving your dreams.
