The three-times-a-week rule is the death knell for a relationship. Bear in mind that sex doesn’t follow rules, and every relationship is different. “Couples who put pressure on themselves to ‘perform’ will only find themselves feeling frustrated and unfulfilled in their relationship,” warns clinical sexologist Leandie Buys.

The national average for sex between couples is 2.8 times per week. And a recent survey of South African women revealed that the average was just once a week. Sex drive can be affected by many things and is different for men and women. Women’s sexual desire is psychologically based while for men, it’s physical. Stress plays a major role for both. Communication is key in every part of your relationship, so discuss your needs and wants, and — with respect for each other’s point of view — work out a happy solution.
