Worldwide, over five million people die from tobacco each year and 20 percent of all smokers are women. But the tobacco companies want that percentage to be higher because they need to recruit new smokers to replace nearly half of the current users who will die prematurely from tobacco-related diseases.
For the World No Tobacco Day 2010 campaign, and throughout the rest of the year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will be encouraging governments to pay particular attention to protecting women from the tobacco companies’ attempts to lure them into a lifetime of nicotine dependence. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself:
KNOW THE LAW
1. Smoking in public areas
Designated smoking areas in restaurants, pubs, and other public spaces need to be completely separated with solid partitioning and have separate ventilation. No person under 18 is allowed in a designated smoking area (even with parental supervision) and failure to comply with these regulations could mean a fine of up to R50 000 for the establishment and R500 for the individual responsible.
2. Protect children’s health
Adults may not smoke in a car when a passenger under the age of 12 is present. Smoking is not allowed in premises (including private homes) used for commercial childcare activities or schooling and tutoring.
3. Marketing of tobacco products
When tobacco advertising was banned in 2000, cigarette companies launched “viral” marketing strategies using the Internet, sms, and word-of-mouth to promote their products at parties, concerts and sporting events. These strategies are no longer allowed, and according to the new legislation, the proprietor of any venue associated with such cigarette promotions will be held liable.
