It’s easy to get distracted by less-than-ideal holiday goodies, but this time of year, some of the healthiest foods are also quite tasty. Here are five delicious and good-for-you summer foods.
Beetroot
If you’ve over-indulged on food and alcohol, adding some raw beetroot or beetroot juice to your diet can help you recover. The beta cyanin in beetroot can help detox your liver by helping the body eliminate toxins and potentially preventing the build-up of fatty deposits.
Berries
Besides being utterly delicious, berries are also low in fat, carbs and kilojoules, and high in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Skip the chocolate and have some sweet berries with muesli instead or mix up a berry smoothie!
Apricots
The high beta-carotene content of apricots make them good for your heart and these flavourful fruits are also a good source of fibre and vitamin A. Enjoy them as a snack on their own or slice some up and add to your muesli.
Pineapple
A good, juicy ripe pineapple can satisfy a sweet craving. Pineapples help build healthy bones as it’s rich in calcium, potassium, fibre, and vitamin C.
Aubergine (brinjal)
Aubergines are versatile with a delicious taste and it will naturally increase your metabolism. Aubergines/brinjals not only block the formation of free radicals, it also reduces cholesterol levels. It is also a source of folic acid and potassium. Add it to casseroles, char grill or oven-roast to keep its low fat properties.
