Vanessa Haywood

Gorgeous Vanessa Haywood, Shape Cover Look 2007 winner and star of the hit Hollywood sci-fi movie District 9 is a fitness fanatic. Check out her rigorous training programme.

Vanessa partook in the Big 5 Challenge at the Knysna Oyster Festival this year (2010). The Challenge includes the Knysna Forest Marathon, the 15km Featherbed Trail Run, a 100km road biking challenge, the 50km Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour and the Duesouth Xterra off-road duathlon.

Vanessa aimed to raise much-needed funds for children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in South Africa. “Money raised by competing in this nutty week of sports events will go to Starfish Greathearts Foundation,” says Haywood.

Vanessa’s top three training tips

1. Since the Big 5 Challenge involves so many different sporting disciplines, it’s very difficult to focus on any one specific discipline. If you’re weak in one type of sport, focus on that one in particular when you train.

2. Training is generally weather-dependent although sometimes running or cycling in the rain prepares you for possible bad weather on race day. You DO NOT want to get sick just before the big day either though, so choose “bad weather days” wisely!

3. The best way to train is to get out onto the road or off-road. Practice makes perfect so put on your running shoes, get into a pool or get in the saddle!
