Tanja’s blog: Three months to go!

Tanja Bosch - Shape 2010 Fitness Diarist

With 3 months to go before my big challenge, I feel that I’m on track. I’m getting fitter and faster and I hope to be completely ready by then.

This week my focus is on the Knysna half-marathon, which I’m running this Saturday. The route is a scenic 21.1km that undulates through the Knysna forest. A year ago, this was my first half-marathon and I finished in 2h36, exhausted and sore. This year, with several more half-marathons firmly under my belt, I’ll definitely be in better shape – and hopefully run a good time!

My last half was Safari, which I finished in 2h29. A few weeks before that I ran a personal best time of 2h26 at the Weskus half-marathon. I’m hoping to shave a few minutes off and run a new best time in Knysna – but that’s being optimistic. I’ve learned that running a good race can depend on a number of factors, some of which are sometimes out of one’s control. Getting enough sleep, adequate nutrition and hydration can be controlled; but you have no idea how strong you will feel on the day.

In the meantime, big thanks to Orca for their sponsorship of some kits which will contribute towards this being a good race. Their two piece tri-suit includes a sleeveless top with built in bra, which is definitely the most comfortable top I’ve ever run in (I usually suffer chafing from my bra). The tights are comfy for running; and best of all is the Orca re-charge jacket, which generates negative ions as you run in order to reduce fatigue and promote recovery. That’s going to be keeping me warm at the start of the race, which is usually rather chilly. I also remember getting rained on last year during most of the race, so may end up running most of the way in my jacket. Thanks Orca!
