For some healthy celebrity inspiration…
Three months after giving birth, model mum Michelle Cowley was back in her old jeans! Unlike Hollywood celebs, who rely on dodgy diets, cigarettes and 48-hour bootcamp torture to get their post-baby bodies back into shape, Michelle credits hers to years of regular exercise and healthy eating.
“I’ve consistently trained three to four times a week for years prior to my pregnancy and I’ve always maintained a well-balanced diet with an emphasis on eating low GI foods,” she says. During her first trimester, she took it easy; in the second she got her energy back and then it was back to gym as usual. “I even did the odd mountain walk. I tried to eat healthily but my pregnant girlfriends and I met for cake and tea a little too often, which is why exercise saved the day.”
Michelle gained 12kg during pregnancy, but did plenty of walking, stepping and super circuit with light weight training in between to keep her weight gain under control. “Getting back into shape after Josh’s birth was easy because of consistent training over the years. I maintain now by doing what I’ve always done.
“My advice to expectant moms is to not compare yourself to anyone else. Our bodies respond differently during pregnancy; some retain water and others put on nothing at all. Our hormones are all over the place, so try to keep a balance and take time out for yourself. You are a sacred vessel and should be treated accordingly. It really is the most amazing thing you’ll ever do, so enjoy the journey!”
