Getting started

This Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) challenge is the answer to my prayers. I’ve been telling myself for a long time that I really need to get back into shape and improve my fitness levels.  So you can imagine how ecstatic I was when we were told that each member of the SHAPE team would be doing a fitness challenge at the SSISA for either 8 or 12 weeks.  We were given the options of the different programmes and I chose the 8-week Healthy Weight – Beginners programme because this is the beginning of a healthy lifestyle for me.

Bevan Matthews is my group’s biokineticist and he’s been tasked with getting me into shape in three one-hour sessions per week at the SSISA in Newlands, Cape Town. Every week I will also meet with dietitian Elienna Horwitz so she can monitor my weight-loss progress.

Day 1 see me incredibly nervous – but I maintained a brave face. My first thought going into the training centre was, “Where are the medical staff? I might need the oxygen mask after the first run!”

But, WOW!! I had a really awesome first training session – there was no reason to be so scared. I thoroughly enjoyed it and had so much energy after that first warm-up lap. I’m not sure what happened but something triggered in my brain; I suddenly had all this vooma in me. It was full-steam ahead with all the exercises and I couldn’t wait for Bevan to give us the next exercise. I had so much energy after our class, which is really good. My eating plan is also going well – I never thought that I’d be eating a salad for lunch and bulking up my meals with lots of veggies… Hmm, loving it!

Till next week.
