My mission: To complete the 8-week Sports Science Healthy Weight Programme.
Finally the much anticipated launch date of the SSISA Shapes up Shape project arrived. Each member of the team got the opportunity to choose a programme that they thought best suited them. Dressed in our brightly coloured New Balance training gear, we kicked off our challenge.
The week started off with us having individual assessments done. Nothing like having your vitals checked to jolt you into action… Age, weight, height, blood pressure, cholesterol and our resting heart rate were measured and recorded. As part of the assessment we also had to complete a motion test, which involved a 12-minite walk/run around the 143-m track, a flexibility test, followed by a full minute of push ups and sit ups, respectively. I excitedly tackled the motion test. It was exhausting and but I felt quite proud that I actually managed to run a few laps – especially since the last time I had done anything like this was at school.
During our first session a week later, our instructor Bevan Matthews explained all our results in layman’s terms, worked out our BMI and also showed us how to measure our training heart rate.
Next, we were each provided with a tailored eating plan (more about that next week) by dietitian Elienna Horwitz, and so far I’ve managed to stick to it. Fingers crossed…
Through this programme I am hoping to tone up, lower my stress levels and lose a roughly 5kg.
This is a great start to what will be an even greater new year!
