Munching carbs in Rome
After a week’s hiatus, I returned to Boot Camp only to be left gasping for air at the back of the class. Oh, no! I pride myself on being solidly average, so how on earth did I end up closer to the rear end? So, now I’m determined to regain my footing and reclaim my place in the middle.
I enjoyed Tuesday’s class. After a week of pasta, bread, pizza and vino rosso, it felt good to sweat it out. I like that I’m not in a stuffy gym counting reps. I like that there are no cruel gym mirrors reflecting my flaws. I enjoy the energy of working out in a group. Did I mention I love the mountain? It’s even better at sunrise.
The one surprising factor this week is that I’m finding myself looking forward to the early mornings. There’s something special about being awake and outdoors just before sunrise. It makes me think of William Wordsworth’s poem, “Composed upon Westminster Bridge”:
“Earth hath not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare”
Pah! What’s more pompous than quoting poetry?
To compensate for my week of sin and sloth, I’ve ditched all refined sugar and carbs this week. I find this is a great way to detox. I also start my morning with a mug of warm water with a squeeze of fresh lemon, and I drink at least 2 litres of water a day.
Ciao!
Ashlin
